If you want to earn a high score on the TOEFL test, you simply must have a strong English vocabulary.

Every question on your TOEFL exam will test your vocabulary in one way or another - and your answers will directly determine whether or not you will be accepted by the English-language University you really want to attend.

How exactly does the TOEFL test your English vocabulary skills?

Reading Comprehension - this section measures how well you understand what you read, and whether or not you'll be able to understand the advanced textbooks and reference material you'll be required to read at your University.

You must be able to understand a wide variety of difficult English vocabulary words to do well on this section of the test. In fact, over 100 years of research have proven that the more words you know, the faster you read and the more you comprehend.

Listening Questions: It's one thing to be able to comprehend the words of a foreign language (like English) when you read them on paper. You can take your time, and think about each word if you have to.

But listening to a native English speaker is another story. The recording won't "slow down" for you if you miss a word - and that can seriously hurt your score if you don't have a strong English vocabulary.

Structure And Written Expression: If you're taking the paper or computer based TOEFL, you'll have to master the Structure sections. These sections test your ability to "recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English."

There are complete-the-sentence questions, and questions that ask you to choose which word in a sentence is incorrect. Both types of questions require you to know and understand how to use the words being tested.

Writing: This section will test your ability to write in English on an assigned topic - and you'll need a solid English vocabulary to do well on it.

You see, it's one thing to be able to pick out the correct words from a multiple-choice list. But writing your own essays is another matter. You need to have a wide range of words at your disposal - and know exactly how to use them - in order to master this section of the test.

There's just no getting around it - if you want a high score on the TOEFL, you're going to have to work on your vocabulary skills. But don't break out your dictionary just yet.
